Flagship Initiatives

The Tiger Conservation Coalition is working with partners to help mobilize an additional US$ 1 billion for the conservation of tigers and tiger landscapes.

The first major event co-organised by the Coalition was the Sustainable Finance for Tiger Landscape Conference which culminated in the Paro Statement and a joint Tiger Conservation Coalition-Royal Government of Bhutan commitment to catalyse an additional 1 billion USD for the conservation of tigers and tiger landscapes from all sources. Her Majesty The Queen of Bhutan, Jetsun Pema Wangchuck, graciously accepted the role of Royal Patron of this critical initiative.

The Tiger Conservation Coalition is working to help mobilize this additional US$ 1 billion through coordination among diverse stakeholders from local to international levels, championing the ambition in private and public fora, advocating for increased participation of key sectors underrepresented in such financing, robustly monitoring progress against the target, driving innovative solutions and opportunities and in some cases directly implementing interventions for positive outcomes in tiger landscapes alongside key government and Indigenous Peoples and Local Community partners.

Some mechanisms the Tiger Conservation Coalition is involved in developing towards this US$ 1 billion ambition are:

Tiger Landscapes
Investment Fund

The Tiger Landscapes Investment Fund (TLIF) has been developed and is being operationalized in response to the urgent need to channel private sector investments into businesses that contribute to the protection, restoration, and sustainable management of tiger landscapes, while enhancing financial sustainability and delivering durable, positive biodiversity outcomes.

The aim of the Tiger Landscapes Investment Fund is to design and deploy an innovative, fit-for-purpose financing mechanism. Since the challenges and opportunities associated with the sustainable financing of biodiversity vary among countries, the mechanism should fit within each country’s context.

The Tiger Landscapes Investment Fund is being led by UNDP (a member of the Tiger Conservation Coalition) while some other members of the Coalition have been involved in the development of the fund and will be a member of the Steering Group of the fund.

Tiger Impact Certificates

The Tiger Conservation Coalition has initiated the development of Tiger Impact Certificates, an innovative Nature Financing Mechanism aligned with the guidelines and guardrails for biodiversity credits. Tiger Impact Certificates represent place-based tiger, community, and climate conservation impact and are designed to appeal to corporate and philanthropic leaders wanting to pioneer nature-based investments. Tiger Impact Certificates are founded on simplicity and robust science-based indicators which represent real and meaningful conservation, climate, and community impact.

Tiger Impact Certificates are a species-focused biodiversity credit with outcome indicators linked to the Tiger Impact Framework – the Tiger Conservation Coalition’s robust conservation strategy for restoring Asian biodiversity. Tiger Impact Certificates represent verified conservation success around three pillars:

  1. Securing tiger and tiger prey populations

  2. Maintaining and enhancing ecological integrity and connectivity

  3. Strengthening meaningful community partnerships.

Tiger Impact Certificates represent a rare biodiversity crediting approach in which community well-being is an integral indicator. This acknowledges the fact that large carnivore conservation is impossible without community support and ensuring the benefits outweigh the costs of living with carnivores. Tiger Impact Certificates are being piloted by the Tiger Conservation Coalition across four sites in Bhutan, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. These sites total ~400,000 hectares and represent a spectrum of conservation challenges and opportunities. All pilot sites have strong field-based partnerships with Tiger Conservation Coalition members and local communities.
